Event | PhD Café | How “nature” divides us, and “landscape” brings us together
Join us on 9 December 2025 in Utrecht for a PhD Café with Dr. Tanja van Hummel, philosopher and scholar of religion specializing in climate-related conflicts in the Netherlands. In her presentation, she will explore the growing polarization between animal and nature activists and farmers living near Natura 2000 areas. She will explain how this polarization works and how we can move beyond it by starting a different kind of conversation.
The title reflects this shift in perspective: while “nature” is a contested term with competing definitions that often set worldviews against each other, “landscape” is a relational concept. It speaks to our connections with community, and nature.
Dr. van Hummel specializes in religion and climate-related conflicts in the Netherlands. In this session, she will explore the intriguing ways the concepts of nature and landscape shape the social relationships, identities, and conflicts.
This event is open to all who are interested in interdisciplinary conversations on environment, society, and meaning-making.
